Reporting Child Abuse

The future of our children is in our hands

If you have a reason to suspect a child in Queensland is experiencing harm, or is at risk of experiencing harm, the following agencies can provide support and advice. In the first instance, reports of suspected child abuse should be made to either the Department of Child Safety or the Queensland Police Service. Reports can also be made by calling Safehands on 1800 Children (1800 2445 3736)

Reports of abuse can be made anonymously. The law also prohibits any police officer or child safety officer from disclosing the identity of the person who provides information to them.

Any information provided to either the police or the department of child safety is reviewed and evaluated. An investigation by police or child safety officers may occur independently of one another or a joint investigation may be undertaken by both agencies in relation to the information that has been provided.

Department of Child Safety

During normal business hours

Your local child safety service centre (CSSC) has professionally-trained child protection staff who are skilled in dealing with suspected child abuse reports.
Locate and contact your local child safety service centre or freecall 1800 811 810.

Outside normal business hours and on weekends

Outside of normal business hours, on weekends, or if you are unable to contact your local CSSC, contact the department's Child Safety After Hours Service Centre (formerly Crisis Care).
The service centre provides an information referral service for families and is responsible for assessing urgent reports about harm to children.
The after hours service centre can be contacted on freecall 1800 177 135 or (07) 3235 9999. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Queensland Police Service

The Queensland Police Service has a number of dedicated units across Queensland to investigate matters relating to children and young people.
If you wish to discuss or report an incident involving a child or young person, contact your local Child Protection and Investigation Unit (formerly Juvenile Aid Bureau) through the Police District Communication Centre nearest you.
